Understanding Proton add-ons

Your Proton plan can grow with you. If your team needs more seats, you want a few more custom domains, or you’d like AI help from Lumo or Scribe, you can add it to the plan you already have without switching plans or starting a new subscription. You only pay for what you add, and changes made mid-cycle are prorated.
This article explains which plans support add-ons, which add-ons each plan can use, how proration works when you add or remove them, and how to set up each one from your dashboard.
What is an add-on?
An add-on is an optional extra you can add to an existing paid Proton plan for an additional cost. Add-ons let you scale your subscription up (or down) without switching to a completely different plan. For example, a business user can buy extra seats or more custom domains, while an individual or family plan holder can add the Lumo Plus add-on without upgrading their plan.
Add-ons are managed from Dashboard → Your plan → Customize plan in Account settings, and every change made is billed with proration.
Which plans support add-ons?
Not every Proton plan can be customized. Generally, add-ons are only available on paid, multi-user, or business-tier plans:

Note: Proton Mail Essentials includes 3 custom domains but does not support adding extra ones. Only Workspace plans can expand their domain allowance.

Which plans can Lumo be added to?
Lumo Plus (the paid tier of Proton’s AI assistant) is included by default in Proton Workspace Premium, Proton Visionary, and Proton Lifetime.
For every other paid plan, Lumo Plus is sold as a separate add-on you can attach to your existing subscription rather than something bundled in by default. This includes:
- Proton Unlimited
- Proton Duo
- Proton Family
- Proton for Business plans (Mail Essentials, Mail Professional, Workspace Standard, VPN Professional, VPN + Pass Professional)
- Any single-user Plus plan (Mail Plus, VPN Plus, Pass Plus, Drive Plus)
Lumo Plus can also be purchased entirely on its own, without any other Proton subscription.
On seat limits: In practice, the number of people who can be covered by a Lumo Plus add-on on a multi-user plan is bound by that plan’s normal member limit. For example, up to 2 members on Duo, or up to 6 members on Family or Visionary. If a business plan needs Lumo for more people than it currently has seats for, it needs to add seats first.
Where Scribe can be added as an add-on
Proton Scribe (the AI writing assistant) is available as a paid, per-user add-on on any Proton for Business plan:

Adding Proton Meet (Meet Professional) as an add-on
Proton Meet is Proton’s end-to-end encrypted video conferencing tool. Everyone with a Proton Account gets a free tier, and Meet Professional can be purchased as an upgrade, either as its own standalone plan, or as an add-on to an existing subscription.
Free tier: Any Proton Account (including Proton Free) can host calls with up to 50 attendees for up to 1 hour. Meetings can also be started instantly without a Proton Account, for up to 4 total participants (host + 3 guests).
Meet Professional unlocks:
- Unlimited meetings per day
- Calls of up to 24 hours long
- Up to 100 participants per call
- Calendar booking pages for scheduling
- Local (device-side) meeting recordings

To add Meet Professional to an existing plan:
- Sign in at account.proton.me and go to account.proton.me/meet/dashboard.
- Under Compare plans, select Add Meet Professional.
- Complete payment. Proration is applied the same way as other add-ons (charged for the remainder of the current billing cycle only).
How proration works with add-ons
Proton prorates most mid-cycle add-on changes so customers only pay (or are credited) for the unused portion of their billing period. The mechanics differ slightly depending on whether you’re adding or removing:
Adding an add-on (extra users, domains, Scribe seats, VPN servers, Lumo):
- You are charged for the new add-on for the remainder of the current billing cycle only, not a full new cycle. This is only when the Primary Admin makes the changes. If another admin tries to add add-ons, the subscription will renew completely.
- Any existing account credit is applied automatically before the remaining balance is charged.
Removing an add-on:
- You are not charged again. Instead, Proton issues a prorated account credit based on how much time is left in the current billing cycle and how many units (users, domains, servers) were removed. This only applies to these three types of add-ons.
For example, if you have a Lumo add-on that you decide to remove, your subscription will be scheduled to renew without the add-on in your next billing cycle. - The remaining credit from the first case is applied automatically to future invoices.
Example of changing billing currency (illustrates the same proration logic Proton applies elsewhere): If a plan is paid monthly starting August 10 and you change something mid-cycle on August 20, the plan is extended to September 20, but you are only billed for the 10-day difference, not a full extra month.
Dedicated VPN servers specifically: Removing a server generates account credit for the unused portion of that server’s rental period, and servers have a 10-day “cooling down” period after removal before they can be reassigned to a different location.
Add-on details
1. Adding users (B2B plans)
Available on Proton Mail Essentials, Proton Mail Professional (legacy), Proton Workspace Standard, and Proton Workspace Premium, plus Proton VPN Professional and VPN + Pass Professional.
To add or remove users:
- Sign in at account.proton.me → Settings → All settings → Dashboard → Your plan.
- Select Customize plan.
- Use the + / – buttons next to Number of users.
- Click Continue to check out (if adding); removing users generates a prorated credit instead.
Each user comes with their own storage, email address, and VPN connection allowance, which varies per plan:

VPN connections per user are capped at 10 and can’t be redistributed between users; an admin can only toggle a user’s allowance on (10) or off (0).
Family, Duo, and Visionary plans also let an admin add members, but through invites rather than a per-user add-on purchase, and are capped at fixed group sizes (2 for Duo; 6 for Family and Visionary).
2. Adding domains
Available on Proton Workspace Standard (up to 15 included, expandable) and Proton Workspace Premium (up to 20 included, expandable). Mail Essentials includes 3 domains but cannot add more.
To add a domain:
- Go to Settings → All settings → Organization → Domain names → Add domain.
- Enter the domain and follow the verification/setup steps.
To expand the domain allowance itself (once the included domains are used up):
- Go to Dashboard → Customize plan.
- Use the + / – buttons next to Custom email domains.
- Continue to checkout (prorated charge) or receive a prorated credit if reducing.
3. Adding Scribe as an add-on
Proton Scribe (the AI writing assistant built into Proton Mail) is:
- Included with Proton Duo, Family, and Visionary.
- A paid add-on, purchased per user, on Proton for Business plans.
- Available as a 14-day free trial on any other paid Mail plan.
To buy the Scribe add-on on a business plan:
- Dashboard → Customize plan.
- Under Proton Scribe writing assistant, select the number of users to enable it for.
- Complete payment.
An admin can then toggle Scribe on/off per individual user under Users and addresses → Edit. To fully cancel the add-on, every user must be switched off first, then the seat count set to zero in Customize plan.
4. Adding Lumo as an add-on
Lumo Plus is included only with Workspace Premium and Visionary. On every other plan (Unlimited, Duo, Family, and Proton for Business plans), you can purchase Lumo Plus separately as an add-on, or as a fully standalone subscription with no other Proton plan attached.
5. Adding dedicated VPN servers
Available on Proton Workspace Standard, Proton Workspace Premium, Proton VPN Professional, and VPN + Pass Professional.
Dedicated servers give an organization a fixed, static IP reserved exclusively for their team. Once purchased, they must be assigned to a Gateway before anyone can connect to them.
To add servers:
- Sign in at account.protonvpn.com.
- Go to VPN → Gateways → Get more servers.
- Under Subscription options → Dedicated servers, click +.
- Any existing credit is applied automatically; so you only need to pay the remaining prorated balance.
To remove servers:
- The server must first be unassigned from any Gateway.
- VPN Professional plans must always keep at least 1 dedicated server. To remove the last one, you must contact support.
- Workspace plans can remove all dedicated servers if needed.
- Removed servers generate a prorated account credit and go through a 10-day cooling-down period before they can be reassigned elsewhere.
