Compose and send emails

A read receipt lets the sender know the recipient has opened the sender’s email. Proton Mail lets you request read receipts from others as well as send them.

When a request is sent, the recipient can accept or decline it. If it is accepted, you will get a receipt when the email is opened. If it is declined, you will receive no notification, whether the email is opened or not.

Not all email clients support this feature, so some recipients may never get a request.

How to request read receipts

1. Select New message in the left sidebar to open the email composer.

2. Go to ⋯ (at the bottom left of the composer window) → Request read receipt. After you send the email, your recipient will receive your request for a read receipt.

Note: If you save your email as a draft after selecting the read receipt option, you will need to select it again before sending the email to your recipient.

How to send read receipts

If the sender has requested a read receipt, you will see a button at the top of the email when you open it. You may accept the request or ignore it. If you ignore it, no read receipt will be sent.

1. If you want to accept, select Send read receipt.

The sender will immediately be sent a read receipt.
